The Festival of Non-fiction was held in At the House of Text in Helsinki, where several panel discussions and interviews between authors and experts took place on stage during the day.
The programme consisted of an intensive discussion format, with a rapid rotation of speakers.
In one day, the programme even included:
- Nine debates.
- Around 45 minutes of programming.
- Several different speakers and moderators.
The fast pace of the programme meant that production also had to run seamlessly.
Situation at
The live broadcast of the Festival differs from many other events in that the programme is constantly evolving.
Performers change quickly, debates start exactly on schedule and the broadcast has to keep up with the action all the time.
In addition, in this production the transmission was relayed Yle Arena, which meant that the technical implementation had to meet the requirements of the broadcasting platform.
To make the event run smoothly, production had to ensure that:
- Discussions and presentations are clearly visible and audible.
- The transmission stays on schedule throughout the day.
- Performer changes are quick.
Realising live production
Solid Stream was responsible for the live-streaming, image and sound production and technical implementation of the event.
The production included, among other things:
- Multi-camera production of four robotic cameras.
- Several microphone channels for the debaters.
- Wireless headset microphones for performers.
- Real-time image mixing.
- Broadcast on Yle Arena.
- A simultaneous stream on the event's own website.
- Delivery of recordings after the event.
In addition, several backup systems were used to ensure that the live broadcast remained stable throughout the event.
The fast pace of the programme requires careful coordination.
The programme of the Festival proceeded according to a tight schedule.
After each debate, a new line-up of speakers took to the stage. At the same time:
- The microphones were changed and set up.
- Performers were prepared for the next debate.
- The new broadcast was launched on YLE Arena.
A sound assistant was involved in the production, responsible for changing the microphones and setting them up.
When performers change quickly, technical production has to work completely unnoticed.
Result
The live broadcast of the Festival reached a wide audience online, and Yle Areena gave the event significant national visibility.
The festival featured several well-known Finnish writers and experts, including President Tarja Halonen.
When the live production of a conference works well:
- The programme is progressing smoothly.
- Conversations are clearly visible and audible.
- The public can follow the event wherever they are.
Solid Stream's role was to ensure that the technical implementation of the event supported the programme and enabled it to be shared with a wide audience.
